Sergei Magnitsky’s Mother Demands Public Apology for Defaming her Son From Chairman of Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee
July 29, 2013
The mother of Sergei Magnitsky has demanded a public apology from Alexei Pushkov, MP, chairman of the Russian State Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee, who publicly stated that Sergei Magnitsky “was no fighter with corruption” and that it “was not determined” that he had died from beating in recent statements to the Russian and international press.
“The statements you have made have offended the feelings of Sergei Magnitsky’s relatives, who had the misfortune to witness first hand the injuries on his body pointing towards a violent death,” said Natalia Magnitskaya in a statement published in Russian by Novaya Gazeta (http://www.novayagazeta.ru/news/66840.html).
“You have made statements over a long period of time about a deceased person, which are impermissible both from the point of view of the morality and law. In spite of this, you have never asked for the clarification of the position from the family of Sergei Magnitsky,” said Magnitsky’s mother in her statement.
Mrs Magnitskaya forwarded to Alexei Pushkov Sergei Magnitsky’s testimony from pre-trial detention in which he pointed out that “his criminal prosecution was a measure of repression in retribution for his help to his client to return the stolen companies, and that with the complicity from investigation, employees of the Interior Ministry implicated by him deliberately created unbearable and inhumane conditions for him in custody as a measure of revenge.”
Magnitsky’s mother has also demanded that Alexei Pushkov provide her the materials on which he based his statements defaming her son posthumously.
