Sergei Magnitsky’s Mother Demands Public Apology for Defaming her Son From Chairman of Duma’s Foreign Affairs Committee

The moth­er of Sergei Mag­nit­sky has demand­ed a pub­lic apol­o­gy from Alex­ei Pushkov, MP, chair­man of the Russ­ian State Duma’s For­eign Affairs Com­mit­tee, who pub­licly stat­ed that Sergei Mag­nit­sky “was no fight­er with cor­rup­tion” and that it “was not deter­mined” that he had died from beat­ing in recent state­ments to the Russ­ian and inter­na­tion­al press.

The state­ments you have made have offend­ed the feel­ings of Sergei Mag­nit­sky’s rel­a­tives, who had the mis­for­tune to wit­ness first hand the injuries on his body point­ing towards a vio­lent death,” said Natalia Mag­nit­skaya in a state­ment pub­lished in Russ­ian by Novaya Gaze­ta (http://www.novayagazeta.ru/news/66840.html).

You have made state­ments over a long peri­od of time about a deceased per­son, which are imper­mis­si­ble both from the point of view of the moral­i­ty and law. In spite of this, you have nev­er asked for the clar­i­fi­ca­tion of the posi­tion from the fam­i­ly of Sergei Mag­nit­sky,” said Mag­nit­sky’s moth­er in her statement.

Mrs Mag­nit­skaya for­ward­ed to Alex­ei Pushkov Sergei Mag­nit­sky’s tes­ti­mo­ny from pre-tri­al deten­tion in which he point­ed out that “his crim­i­nal pros­e­cu­tion was a mea­sure of repres­sion in ret­ri­bu­tion for his help to his client to return the stolen com­pa­nies, and that with the com­plic­i­ty from inves­ti­ga­tion, employ­ees of the Inte­ri­or Min­istry impli­cat­ed by him delib­er­ate­ly cre­at­ed unbear­able and inhu­mane con­di­tions for him in cus­tody as a mea­sure of revenge.”

Mag­nit­sky’s moth­er has also demand­ed that Alex­ei Pushkov pro­vide her the mate­ri­als on which he based his state­ments defam­ing her son posthumously.
