Все ведущие политические партии Канады заявили о поддержке нового законодательства Магнитского накануне парламентских выборов

13 октября 2015 года – Накануне парламентских выборов, намеченных на следующий понедельник, 19 октября 2015 года, все ведущие политические партии Канады заявили о своей поддержке законодательства Магнитского.

В прошлом году резолюция Магнитского, предложенная бывшим министром юстиции Канады, депутатом Ирвином Котлером, была принята в Палате общин Канады единогласно. 

Сейчас накануне выборов все ведущие политические партии Канады заявили, что незамедлительно реализуют законодательство Магнитского и введут санкции в отношении нарушителей прав человека.

Министр иностранных дел Канады, депутат от Консервативной партии Роб Николсон сообщил, что его партия предпримет законодательные шаги по вводу санкций в отношении нарушителей прав человека в виде запрета на въезд в страну и арест активов (http://upnorth.eu/canadian-ministers-pledge-to-adopt-global-magnitsky-nemtsov-legislation-and-create-digital-freedom-fund/)

Либеральная партия Канады высказала свою решительную поддержку законодательства Магнитского: «Вводя санкции, мы создаем ощутимые последствия для нарушителей прав человека и условия для предотвращения таких нарушений в будущем». Политические партии заявили свою позицию по законодательству Магнитского в ответ на обращение общественной организации «Конгресс украинцев Канады» накануне выборов. 

19 октября 2015 года будут избраны депутаты в Палату общин 42 парламента Канады.

Ahead of Canadian Elections Next Monday, All Major Canadian Political Parties Commit to Implement Magnitsky Sanctions Legislation if Elected

13 Octo­ber 2015 – All of Canada’s major polit­i­cal par­ties have pub­licly pledged to imple­ment Mag­nit­sky sanc­tions leg­is­la­tion if elect­ed ahead of the fed­er­al elec­tion set for next Mon­day, 19 Octo­ber 2015. 

Mag­nit­sky sanc­tions leg­is­la­tion will cre­ate con­se­quences for gross human rights vio­la­tions. Such leg­is­la­tion is already in place in the Unit­ed States.
Last spring Lib­er­al Cana­di­an MP Irwin Cotler’s motion call­ing for a Mag­nit­sky law won unan­i­mous sup­port in the Canada’s House of Commons.

Canada’s Min­is­ter of For­eign Affairs and mem­ber of the Con­ser­v­a­tive par­ty Rob Nichol­son gave a pledge to amend Canada’s exist­ing sanc­tions regime to include Mag­nit­sky sanc­tions — the abil­i­ty to tar­get human rights abusers through­out the world with visa bans and asset freezes (http://upnorth.eu/canadian-ministers-pledge-to-adopt-global-magnitsky-nemtsov-legislation-and-create-digital-freedom-fund/)

The Lib­er­al Par­ty of Cana­da said that a Lib­er­al Gov­ern­ment will intro­duce leg­is­la­tion, mod­elled on the US Mag­nit­sky leg­is­la­tion, because of the belief that, “by impos­ing sanc­tions, we can impose mean­ing­ful penal­ties on human rights vio­la­tors and deter future vio­la­tions,” and that it “will imme­di­ate­ly expand the list of sanc­tioned Rus­sians to include influ­en­tial busi­ness­men, and close Putin sup­port­ers, Igor Sechin and Vladimir Yakunin.” (http://www.ucc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/1‑LPC-Response-Election-2015.pdf)

The state­ments from the polit­i­cal par­ties came in response to ques­tions raised by the Ukrain­ian Cana­di­an Con­gress (UCC) chal­leng­ing all Cana­di­an polit­i­cal par­ties on issues of impor­tance to the Ukrain­ian Cana­di­an com­mu­ni­ty in advance of the election. 

The 2015 Cana­di­an elec­tion will be held on Octo­ber 19, 2015 and will elect mem­bers to the House of Com­mons of the 42^nd Par­lia­ment of Canada.

Сергей Магнитский посмертно удостоен почетного звания финалиста международной премии «За нравственное величие»

5 октября 2015 года –  Сергей Магнитский посмертно удостоен звания финалиста международной премии «За нравственное величие».

Сергей Магнитский был отмечен на международной церемонии, прошедшей в Ванкувере, вместе с индонезийской организацией «Следим за коррупцией», а также призерами премии — ангольским журналистом Рафаэлем де Море и кенийским анти-коррупционным активистом Джоном Джитонго.

«Я хотела бы поблагодарить всех людей, помнящих Сергея, — сказала мама Сергея Магнитского Наталья. – Пока человека помнят, он — жив.»

В ходе международной церемонии «За нравственное величие» отмечаются выдающиеся люди и организации, внесшие значительный вклад в продвижение идеалов правосудия и справедливости и противодействия коррупции. Церемония проходит раз в два года под эгидой Юридической школы имени Питера Алларда в Канаде.

«Магнитский жил, как писал Солженицын.…  Я думаю, он — герой», — сказал Валерий Борщев, возглавлявший независимую комиссию правозащитников, изучавших обстоятельства пыток и убийства Сергея Магнитского в ноябре 2009 года в московском следственном изоляторе.

Sergei Magnitsky Posthumously Honoured by the Allard Prize Committee for International Integrity

Sergei Mag­nit­sky Posthu­mous­ly Hon­oured by the Allard Prize Com­mit­tee for Inter­na­tion­al Integrity

5 Octo­ber 2015 – Sergei Mag­nit­sky, the Russ­ian lawyer who exposed a $230 mil­lion cor­rupt scheme by Russ­ian offi­cials, has been posthu­mous­ly hon­oured by the Allard Prize Com­mit­tee for Inter­na­tion­al Integri­ty. The recog­ni­tion comes one month before the 6^th anniver­sary of his mur­der in Russ­ian police cus­tody at the age of 37.

Sergei Magnitsky’s moth­er, wife and son attend­ed the award cer­e­mo­ny held in Van­cou­ver, Cana­da at the Uni­ver­si­ty of British Columbi­a’s Peter A. Allard School of Law.

On accept­ing the hon­ourable recog­ni­tion on behalf of Sergei Mag­nit­sky, his moth­er said:

“I would like to thank all peo­ple who remem­ber Sergei. Because when the per­son is remem­bered, that per­son is alive. I recent­ly saw a per­son who said I am alive because of Sergei’s sacrifice.”

Valery Borschev, chair of the Moscow Pub­lic Over­sight Com­mis­sion, who inves­ti­gat­ed how Sergei Mag­nit­sky­had been tor­tured and mur­dered in police cus­tody, said:

“Mag­nit­sky lived like Solzhen­it­syn wrote – don’t be afraid, don’t beg. I think he is a hero.”

Sergei Mag­nit­sky was one of four final­ists for the 2015 Allard Prize for Inter­na­tion­al Integri­ty. The oth­er final­ists includ­ed Indone­sia Cor­rup­tion Watch, and two recip­i­ents of the prize — John Githon­go, who exposed a $1 bil­lion cor­rup­tion scan­dal in the Kenyan gov­ern­ment, and Rafael Mar­ques de Morais, a jour­nal­ist writ­ing on issues of con­flict dia­monds and army bru­tal­i­ty in Ango­la. The Allard Prize for Inter­na­tion­al Integri­ty rec­og­nizes indi­vid­u­als and organ­i­sa­tions who show excep­tion­al courage and lead­er­ship in com­bat­ing corruption.

Sergei Magnitsky’s name has become syn­ony­mous with the lack of rule of law in Rus­sia. His tor­ture and killing in Russ­ian police cus­tody after he uncov­ered and tes­ti­fied about Russ­ian offi­cials involved in the $230 mil­lion theft has led to the adop­tion of the 2012 Sergei Mag­nit­sky Rule of Law Account­abil­i­ty Act in the Unit­ed States which impos­es tar­get­ed sanc­tions in the form of visa bans and asset freezes on those involved in his case, as well as in oth­er gross human rights abus­es. A Glob­al Mag­nit­sky Bill which would apply sim­i­lar sanc­tions to cas­es of human rights vio­la­tions around the world is cur­rent­ly under con­sid­er­a­tion in the U.S. Sen­ate after its approval by the U.S. Sen­ate For­eign Rela­tions Committee.
