THE UNLAWFUL PERSECUTION, TORTURE AND MURDER
OF SERGEI MAGNITSKY: VOLATIONS OF THE INTERNATIONAL
CONVENTION AGAINST TORTURE
On Thursday, 22 April 2010, at 11:30am, Interfax will be hosting a press conference announcing new legal initiatives to seek justice for the unlawful arrest, torture and murder of 37-year old anti-corruption lawyer Sergei Magnitsky.
The press conference will take place at the Interfax Press Centre, 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya, Building 2, Str. 1, Moscow. The following individuals will be speaking:
- Ms. Ludmila Alexeeva, Chairperson of the Moscow Helsinki Group
- Mr. Valery Borschev, Chairman of the Moscow Prison Oversight Commission
- Ms. Natalya Magnitskaya, Mother of Sergei Magnitsky
The speakers will also announce a number of legal steps that have recently been taken to seek justice for the unlawful arrest, torture and murder of Sergei Magnitsky. He was killed in order to conceal the crimes of senior Russian Interior Ministry officers. The press conference will also discuss the wider problem of corrupt law enforcement officials abusing their police powers to commit crimes and ruin the lives of innocent individuals.
The Moscow Helsinki Group is a Russian non-governmental organisation that seeks to protect human rights and assist in the development of civil society in Russia. To achieve this, the group exposes human rights violations and works to ensure compliance with Russia’s human rights obligations under Russian and international law.
The Moscow Prison Oversight Commission is a Moscow-based watchdog organisation empowered by law with monitoring human rights in Russian detention centres. On 28 December 2009, the Commission released the results of its five-week investigation into the death of Sergei Magnitsky, describing his torture and the violation of his human rights while in custody.
