A group of Russ­ian civ­il rights activists demon­strat­ed in front of the US and UK embassies in Moscow in sup­port of the “The Mag­nit­sky list” — which impos­es tar­get­ed visa sanc­tions and asset freezes on Russ­ian offi­cials involved in cor­rup­tion and gross human rights abuse. The sanc­tions became law last year in the US with the pas­sage of the Sergei Mag­nit­sky Rule of Law Account­abil­i­ty Act by an over­whelm­ing bi-par­ti­san major­i­ty in Con­gress. Read more

The moth­er of Sergei Mag­nit­sky has demand­ed a pub­lic apol­o­gy from Alex­ei Pushkov, MP, chair­man of the Russ­ian State Duma’s For­eign Affairs Com­mit­tee, who pub­licly stat­ed that Sergei Mag­nit­sky “was no fight­er with cor­rup­tion” and that it “was not deter­mined” that he had died from beat­ing in recent state­ments to the Russ­ian and inter­na­tion­al press. Russian Prosecutor Seeks Moscow Court to Declare Sergei Magnitsky Guilty and Not Be Rehabilitated in First Posthumous Trial in Russian History

Today, the Russ­ian pros­e­cu­tor has asked the Tver­skoi court in Moscow to declare that Sergei Mag­nit­sky was guilty and that he should be refused reha­bil­i­ta­tion. The request was made dur­ing the last ses­sion of the tri­al of Sergei Mag­nit­sky who has been deceased for three and a half years after being tor­tured and killed in police custody.

The pros­e­cu­tor asked the court not to apply any pun­ish­ment to Sergei Mag­nit­sky, and to cease the case with the ver­dict of guilty and no chance of future rehabilitation.

Mag­nit­sky is ful­ly incrim­i­nat­ed, and there are no grounds for his reha­bil­i­ta­tion,” said pros­e­cu­tor accord­ing to Inter­fax news agency (http://www.interfax.ru/russia/txt.asp?id=316392). Read more

Council of Europe’s Rapporteur Presents Explosive 41-Page Report on the Magnitsky Affair Completely Rubbishing the Russian Government’s Version of Events

Today, the Coun­cil of Europe’s Rap­por­teur, Andreas Gross MP, pre­sent­ed the results of a detailed six-month review of the tor­ture and death of Sergei Mag­nit­sky in Russ­ian state cus­tody and the state sanc­tioned cov­er-up which fol­lowed. His 41-page report enti­tled, “Refus­ing Impuni­ty for the Killers of Sergei Mag­nit­sky,” was pre­sent­ed to the Human Rights and Legal Affairs Com­mit­tee of the Coun­cil of Europe this morning.
The report labels as “unac­cept­able” the ongo­ing impuni­ty of those respon­si­ble for Mr Magnitsky’s death and for the largest known theft of pub­lic funds in Russ­ian his­to­ry that Mag­nit­sky had exposed. Read more
