Ahead of another day in the historic posthumous trial of Sergei Magnitsky in Moscow, Magnitsky’s mother has addressed the Russian press asking them to refrain from repeating false accusations that the state is making against her dead son. She called the trial today a “blasphemy” and “desecration of the memory of her son” organised in response to the Magnitsky Law passed in the United States. Read more

The widow of Sergei Magntisky has appealed to the conscience of all those participating in the trial against her dead husband, to cease their actions and end this unprecedented spectacle.
“Because of the posthumous trial against my dead husband, Sergei Magnitsky, by the Tverskoi Court in Moscow, I state that I view this process as defiling his memory,” said Natalia Zharikova in today’s statement to court. Read more
President Putin Directs Government Attack on Bill Browder to Stop Magnitsky Sanctions Being Enacted in Europe

In a further escalation of the persecution of Hermitage executives and lawyers by the Russian authorities, this morning the Russian Interior Ministry announced new spurious allegations targeting William Browder, CEO of Hermitage Capital Management. The retaliatory campaign of state slander, posthumous prosecution and intimidation gained momentum in Russia after President Putin’s personal attack on Mr Browder two months ago at a national press conference. This morning, the Russian Interior Ministry made further accusation against Mr. Browder alleging “theft” of Gazprom shares by companies affiliated with the Hermitage Fund ten years ago and accusing Bill Browder of attempting to interfere with Gazprom’s strategic direction through requests for financial information and for campaigning for a seat on the board of the company between 2001 and 2004. The Russian Interior Ministry also threatened to use international search and arrest warrants in their “investigation” into Browder. Read more
Sergei Magnitsky’s Relatives Challenge the State Authority to Appoint Defence Lawyer to Magnitsky in his Posthumous Proceedings

Ahead of tomorrow’s closed hearing at Tverskoi Court in Moscow, Sergei Magnitsky’s relatives have written a complaint to the 5th Chambers of the Moscow Bar challenging the legality of the Bar providing a lawyer to ‘defend’ Sergei Magnitsky in the posthumous trial that the family is boycotting.
In their letter addressed to the head of 5th Chambers of Moscow Bar Association Sergei Oreshkin, which received a court instruction to assign a defence lawyer to the deceased, Sergei Magnitsky’s relatives stated that the Russian law does not allow for trials of dead people and consequently the appointment of a defence lawyer for a dead person in such proceedings would be illegal. They also describe the Russian authorities attempt to pressure them to be involved in the posthumous proceedings against their will as “monstrous”. Read more
French Lawmakers Call on Russia to Cease “Grim Comedy” of Magnitsky Posthumous Trial Ahead of the 4 March Hearing

Ahead of the 4 March hearing in Moscow in the first ever posthumous trial in the history of Russia of dead whistle-blowing lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, ten French lawmakers published an open letter calling on the Russian authorities to cease this “grim comedy” echoing of “repression” and take steps to bring Magnitsky killers to justice and protect his family from intimidation.
“Magnitsky killers should not be above the law, and the grim comedy of his posthumous trial must stop. Similarly, the ongoing harassment and suffering caused to his mother and widow must stop,” said French lawmakers. Read more
