Lawyer Blasts Obstruction of Justice in the Trial of Russian Prison Doctor and Names Putin in Magnitsky Death Trial

In the final hearing of the Magnitsky death trial of Dmitry Kratov, former head of Butyrka Prison in charge of Magnitsky’s medical care, the lawyer for Magnitsky’s mother, Nikolai Gorokhov, made dramatic closing remarks naming President Putin’s role in obstructing justice for Sergei Magnitsky.
“On 20 December 2012, a political direction was announced for the answer to the question about the causes of death of Magnitsky. President of the country Putin said at the open press conference broadcast on all state TV channels that Magnitsky died, but not from torture, that nobody tortured him, and he had died from heart failure,” said lawyer Gorokhov. On 14 December 2012, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow will hear two lawsuits filed by Jamison Firestone, the former law partner of Sergei Magnitsky, seeking to compel the Russian authorities to investigate his prior complaints regarding the evidence of illicit enrichment of the family of Interior Ministry officer Artem Kuznetsov, and the role of lawyer Andrei Pavlov in court proceedings that were used to perpetrate the enormous fraud uncovered by late Sergei Magnitsky. Russian Investigative Committee Rejects President’s Human Rights Council Report in its Investigation of Tax Officials Exposed by Sergei Magnitsky

The Russian Investigative Committee has rejected the Russian President’s Human Rights Council’s report on the corruption uncovered by Sergei Magnitsky in their investigation into the illegal tax refunds approved by the Moscow tax inspection No 28, which led to the theft of $230 million from the Russian government. The refusal was issued by S. Olkhovnikov, senior official of the Russian Investigative Committee. Read more
Russia Moves Forward with the First Posthumous Trial in Russian History in the Magnitsky Case

Today, the Russian General Prosecutor’s Office announced that they sent to court the case against Hermitage Fund’s deceased lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, and against William Browder, CEO of Hermitage Capital Management, in absentia.
This will be the first posthumous trial in the Russian legal history and the third known trial against a foreign citizen in absentia in Russia.
“This smacks of desperation and is clearly a retaliatory move by the Russian government against our quest to get justice for Sergei Magnitsky. We are back to the show trials of 1937,” said a Hermitage Capital representative. Read more

Last night in London, three globally recognised personalities joined the worlds of entertainment and media, in a special gala performance of the play “One Hour Eighteen Minutes” which focuses on the final moments in the life of Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was killed in custody in 2009 after uncovering and exposing Russian government corruption.
Following the performance of the play, Sir Tom Stoppard the renowned playwright, Bianca Jagger, human rights campaigner, and the former Soviet dissident Vladimir Bukowski took to the stage with William Browder, CEO Hermitage Capital, to discuss the state of human rights and rule of law in modern Russia and the campaign for justice for Sergei Magnitsky.
