Lawyer Blasts Obstruction of Justice in the Trial of Russian Prison Doctor and Names Putin in Magnitsky Death Trial

In the final hear­ing of the Mag­nit­sky death tri­al of Dmit­ry Kra­tov, for­mer head of Butyr­ka Prison in charge of Magnitsky’s med­ical care, the lawyer for Magnitsky’s moth­er, Niko­lai Gorokhov, made dra­mat­ic clos­ing remarks nam­ing Pres­i­dent Putin’s role in obstruct­ing jus­tice for Sergei Magnitsky. 

On 20 Decem­ber 2012, a polit­i­cal direc­tion was announced for the answer to the ques­tion about the caus­es of death of Mag­nit­sky. On 14 Decem­ber 2012, the Bas­man­ny Dis­trict Court of Moscow will hear two law­suits filed by Jami­son Fire­stone, the for­mer law part­ner of Sergei Mag­nit­sky, seek­ing to com­pel the Russ­ian author­i­ties to inves­ti­gate his pri­or com­plaints regard­ing the evi­dence of illic­it enrich­ment of the fam­i­ly of Inte­ri­or Min­istry offi­cer Artem Kuznetsov, and the role of lawyer Andrei Pavlov in court pro­ceed­ings that were used to per­pe­trate the enor­mous fraud uncov­ered by late Sergei Mag­nit­sky. Russian Investigative Committee Rejects President’s Human Rights Council Report in its Investigation of Tax Officials Exposed by Sergei Magnitsky

The Russ­ian Inves­tiga­tive Com­mit­tee has reject­ed the Russ­ian Pres­i­den­t’s Human Rights Council’s report on the cor­rup­tion uncov­ered by Sergei Mag­nit­sky in their inves­ti­ga­tion into the ille­gal tax refunds approved by the Moscow tax inspec­tion No 28, which led to the theft of $230 mil­lion from the Russ­ian gov­ern­ment. Russia Moves Forward with the First Posthumous Trial in Russian History in the Magnitsky Case

Today, the Russ­ian Gen­er­al Prosecutor’s Office announced that they sent to court the case against Her­mitage Fund’s deceased lawyer Sergei Mag­nit­sky, and against William Brow­der, CEO of Her­mitage Cap­i­tal Man­age­ment, in absentia.

This will be the first posthu­mous tri­al in the Russ­ian legal his­to­ry and the third known tri­al against a for­eign cit­i­zen in absen­tia in Russia.
“This smacks of des­per­a­tion and is clear­ly a retal­ia­to­ry move by the Russ­ian gov­ern­ment against our quest to get jus­tice for Sergei Mag­nit­sky. We are back to the show tri­als of 1937,” said a Her­mitage Cap­i­tal rep­re­sen­ta­tive. Read more

Sir Tom Stoppard, Bianca Jagger and Vladimir Bukowski lead gala performance of “One Hour Eighteen Minutes” in London in memory of Sergei Magnitsky

Last night in Lon­don, three glob­al­ly recog­nised per­son­al­i­ties joined the worlds of enter­tain­ment and media, in a spe­cial gala per­for­mance of the play “One Hour Eigh­teen Min­utes” which focus­es on the final moments in the life of Russ­ian lawyer Sergei Mag­nit­sky, who was killed in cus­tody in 2009 after uncov­er­ing and expos­ing Russ­ian gov­ern­ment corruption.

Fol­low­ing the per­for­mance of the play, Sir Tom Stop­pard the renowned play­wright, Bian­ca Jag­ger, human rights cam­paign­er, and the for­mer Sovi­et dis­si­dent Vladimir Bukows­ki took to the stage with William Brow­der, CEO Her­mitage Cap­i­tal, to dis­cuss the state of human rights and rule of law in mod­ern Rus­sia and the cam­paign for jus­tice for Sergei Mag­nit­sky.
