UK Authorities Refused Russian Mutual Legal Assistance Request in Magnitsky Posthumous Prosecution Case
2 July 2012 – The Russian Interior Ministry reported this morning that the UK authorities had refused their mutual legal assistance request in the case of posthumous prosecution of late whistle-blowing lawyer Sergei Magnitsky and in-absentia prosecution of his client William Browder who is campaigning for targeted visa and financial sanctions on the Russian government officials involved in the false arrest, torture and in-custody murder of Magnitsky.
In spite of the refusal from the UK to cooperate in this high-profile matter, the Russian Interior Ministry stated their intention to move the first-in-history posthumous case to trial, saying they see no “legal” obstacle to it. Read more
Members of German Parliament Call For German and EU-Wide Visa Bans and Asset Freezes on Russian Officials Implicated in the Magnitsky Case

Following the Magnitsky Act’s approval by the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a number of German lawmakers have adopted a similar resolution calling for the German government to initiate both a German and EU-wide visa ban and asset freeze on the Russian officials implicated in the Magnitsky case.
The motion entitled “Denial of Entry into the EU for the Russian Participants in the Magnitsky Case” was adopted by members of the Alliance 90/The Greens faction in the German parliament (http://www.bundestag.de/presse/hib/2012_06/2012_325/03.html). Read more
Senator McCain Calls Upon President Obama to Apply Aggressive New Sanctions Designed to Combat Terrorism to the Russian Organized Crime Group Who Murdered Sergei Magnitsky

Today U.S. Senator John McCain called on President Obama to invoke Executive Order 13581 against the Klyuev Organized Crime Group in Russia connected to the murder of whistle-blowing lawyer Sergei Magnitsky. Executive Order 13581 was signed by President Obama in July last year and allows the President to “proscribe” organized crime groups using the same tools that the US Government currently uses against terrorist organizations.
“I write to you today to request that you begin a process to determine whether to designate and impose sanctions, under the Executive Order 13581, against a dangerous transnational criminal organization known as the “Klyuev Group ‚” said Senator McCain in the letter. Read more
Radio Netherlands Wins Prestigious International Radio Award for Reporting on Sergei Magnitsky Justice Campaign

“Justice for Sergei – A Debt of Honour,” a radio interview by Radio Netherlands Worldwide with William Browder, CEO of Hermitage Capital, on the campaign to get justice for his lawyer Sergei Magnitsky tortured to death in Russian police custody (http://www.rnw.nl/english/radioshow/seeking-justice), won the Best Radio Coverage Award at the New York International Radio and Television Festivals last night.
The interview won the gold medal in the “Best Coverage of an On-going News Story” category at the New York International Radio and Television Festivals which had over 200 entries from 30 countries. Read more
US Religious Groups Call On the U.S. Congress to Impose Magnitsky Sanctions

Today a number of US religious organizations from different denominations have called on the U.S. Congress to pass the Magnitsky Act. The leaders of nine US religious organisations have written to members of Congress urging the swift passage of the Magnitsky Act in its current form. In their letter, they point out that the Magnitsky Act gives the United States an important and effective policy tool to address serious human rights abuses around the world (http://ucsj.org/2012/06/15/sergei-magnitsky/).
“It is one thing to talk about the human rights and religious freedoms and quite another to actually do something about it. Because of the well thought out terms of this legislation, we believe that this bill will become an effective lever that the United States will have in dealing with this pernicious and growing problem of human rights abuses around the world,” said the religious groups in their joint letter.
