This death will further compromise the standing of our judicial system

I just read with great sadness and disgust about the death of your attorney in Moscow. Quarreling over money is one thing, but this is truly abysmal and I’m sure can’t be easy for you to deal with. At least you, and his poor family, should know that this is not a trivial event to people who have cared about Russia and its destiny. Please convey my condolences among the many others I’m sure you’re receiving.

I was shocked and appalled to learn today of Sergey Magnitskiy’s death in custody. The judge who denied him medical treatment should be facing a murder charge. I feel for you and your colleagues at this difficult time. I would be grateful if you could pass on to Sergey’s family that there are people in Britain who care deeply about Russia and are horrified that a talented young man should have been let down by his country in such a tragic way.

  4. Fianna Jesover on November 18th, 2009 20:48

I learned yesterday with tremendous regret about Sergei’s death. Please accept our deepest sympathy. We recall your earlier concerns about his safety and are outraged to hear about this tragedy. Our thoughts are with you and his loved ones

  5. William Browder on November 18th, 2009 20:49

Sergey Magnitskiy was an honorable man who showed extraordinary courage. He believed in an ideal; that corruption could be destroyed in Russia, and that the law would protect him. I know I speak for everyone when I say that both Sergey and his family are in our hearts at this time.

  6. Guest on November 18th, 2009 20:49

We now mourn the death of a young lawyer who was simply trying to stand up to a broken judicial system

  7. Chairman Cardin on November 18th, 2009 20:50

Magnitskiy died in prison after being illegally arrested by the very same officials he had previously exposed as corrupt, and detained for a year without trial

Sergei was someone I knew. He was an excellent lawyer and a good person. The circumstances of his death are shocking. I feel sorry for the people responsible for his death – they will have to live with this crime for the rest of their lives. My thoughts are with his family and relatives. God bless his memory.

  9. Tim Enneking on November 19th, 2009 19:20

An absolute travesty! Not only a talented lawyer but a man of the highest principles — for which he paid with his life. We should all be so strong in our beliefs, although I hope no one else has to pay the price for them that Sergei did.

I have been following developments in Russia for the past 48 years, first with Radio Liberty, then at CSIS, and now with the USRBC. Nothing has shocked me more than the judicial murder of Sergey Magnitskiy, a thoroughly decent man who put his trust in the rule of law in Russia.

  11. Lord Marlesford on November 19th, 2009 22:20

I express my deep sympathy to Sergey Magnitskiy’s family.

  12. Reiner Hartmann on November 20th, 2009 13:56

Why does it always take away from us the very best and brilliant, why does it has to come to such a tradegy to put light on the very dark side of this institution and the role of law in Russia.

  13. Alexander Monin on November 20th, 2009 15:43

Sergey Magnitskiy was indeed an honorable man who showed extraordinary courage.

With sadness I have read the news about the death of Sergey Magnitskiy. As a Member of the European Parliament, I endorsed and will endorse the Parliament’s continuous stance on the lack in credibility of Russia’s human rights policy. In its resolution of 17 September 2009, the Parliament “unreservedly condemns and strongly deplores the harassment and attacks on the lives of human rights defenders, lawyers and journalists in Russia”. Unfortunately, however, the death of Mr Magnitskiy clearly shows that Russia, a Member of the Council of Europe, continues to be in sad contradiction with its obligations under international law.

  15. Neil Micklethwaite on November 20th, 2009 17:11

A total and disgraceful loss of a young father’s life. My strongest condolences to his family at this time.

  16. Guest on November 20th, 2009 18:27

This whole story is so disgraceful and disgusting that I am failing to find words to express, to fully capture the embarassment and the tragedy. The unfortunate and petrifying reality is that neither the Hermitage case, nor the circumstances of Sergei’s detention, or, more accurately, torture, and death will be investigated, or, if they are investigated, the results of the ivestigation will not be made available to the public, or, if they are made available to the public, we will not be able to trust them, to be sure that what is revealed is indeed the truth, since the reputation of the Russian government, prosecution and judiciary is such that a sane person will not believe a word they say. So naturally people who have put Sergei into prison and who have treated him in such inhumanly manner won’t be punished. My only hope is that there is justice in this life, and it is not the political and legal justice I am taklking about but the universal justice, the law and order of things in this world, in this life, and that whoever is ultimately responsible for the beginning and outcome of this whole story will get what they deserve one way or another. I feel for Sergei, I feel for his loved ones, God bless the memory of him and god bless his family. Pust’ zemlya emu budet pukhom.

  18. Виталий on November 20th, 2009 20:46

A tragic event and my deepest condolences. Such an event is not only bad for all those close to the deceased but very bad also for Russia and the future of the Russian people. Those of us who long to see Russia prosper and share its colossal talents and skills with the rest of the world, can only deplore this whole event and urge the Russian leadership to renewed efforts to establish good governance and good justice in their nation, so that it can become truly great again.

What a heartbreaking story. My deepest sympathies to Sergei’s family, especially his wife and children. Russia needs more people like Sergei, not fewer. Russia’s unique tragedy is that so long as it kills off its Best and Brightest, the country will continue its slow-motion suicide.

  32. Сергей on November 24th, 2009 06:55

My condolances to the family. Unfortunatly ive never met Sergey, but i believe he was a very brave and determined person. His death is indeed a big shame for our judicial system, and it reminded us again how low is a human life here compared with a billions of cash.

It was another extrajudicial capital punishment of political opponent. It was another de-facto declaration of established regime. It should be internationally firmly recognized.
Let Lord’s mercy be upon all of us.
Eternal rest, grant to Sergey, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen

I would like to express deep sympathy for the family, friends and colleagues of Sergei Magnitsky. I have great respect for the way he stood up against a giant with endless determination. Let us hope that this brutal murder will not be ignored by the Russian leadership and may lead to an acceleration of the reforms in the corrupted remains of an outdated system.

  46. James Walker on December 1st, 2009 22:44

It is with great sadness, but also a profound sense of pride, that I learned today of the death of Sergei Magnitsky (from http://www.Economist.com) . Sadness for the death of a good man, and pride at hearing the story of a brave man standing up to the outrages of abusive power and corruption.

Russia suffers so much at present, and it rends your heart to hear of the death of yet another upstanding preson, fighting for justice in a land that has seen so little.

History will vindacte them all, and whilst that is cold comfort to their families now, it will be a part of a great legacy for future generations of Russians.

  47. Max Lewis on December 2nd, 2009 03:51

It is disheartening to see such hypocrisy. Its incomprehensible to fathom the extremes of Modern Russia. What scares me the most is the future. When the people have the power to challenge Putin’s United Russia that will be a sigh of relief.

  48. Daria on December 2nd, 2009 06:13

  54. guest on December 10th, 2009 03:29

It is highly sad that fighting against corruption in Russia cost the life for Sergey. It was shock for me.
For me as Russia patriot it is important to know who raids investors in Russia. However, It is not the game and as a human I understand that your attempts to trace the money stolen from Russian budget might unfortunatelly cause somebody else life.
Also I do not understand your approach to blackmail those raiders. I do not understand what are you trying to receive by doing that. If you have information – you should immediatelly make it public and do not even try to blackmail powerful raiders.
