Moscow Sakharov Center Commemorates Sergei Magnitsky’s 41st Birthday

April 8, 2013

Today, 8 April at 7 pm the Moscow Sakharov Center will commemorate the 41st birthday of late whistle-blowing lawyer Sergei Magnitsky with a cultural event devoted to his heroic fight for justice and the strength of his spirit in the face of physical and psychological repression in Russian police custody.

The evening will include a recital of poems, a performance of classical music and songs, and a presentation of Sergei Magnitsky’s diaries.

The event is open to the public.

The address of the Sakharov Center is: building 6, 57 Zemlyanoi Val (nearest metro stations: Kurskaya, Taganskaya or Chkalovskaya).

Four days before Sergei Magnitsky’s death in custody, he wrote his last statement to the court, which the judge did not allow him to submit. In his written statement, he said:

“And now it will be a year that I am being held in prison as hostage in the interests of persons wishing that the true perpetrators of the theft of 5.4 billion rubles from the budget will never be determined…My placement in custody has nothing to do with the purpose of criminal justice, and…is a punishment that I am being subjected solely because I defended the interests of my client, and ultimately, of the state.”

“This statement by Sergei Magnitsky has become his legacy to all those who stand up to corruption and injustice no matter how hard it is,” said a Hermitage Capital representative.
