EU Commission: Magnitsky case is a litmus test of the Medvedev’s Presidency

The European Commission issued a strong statement regarding the case of 37-year old Russian anti-corruption lawyer Sergei Magnitsky murdered in custody last year, calling it a litmus test of the Medvedev’s Presidency.
The European Commission said: “Today, the Magnitsky case remains an important litmus test of whether President Medvedev is serious in his recent calls for modernization and rule-of-law in Russia.”
The European Commission said that in spite of the European Commission elevating this issue to the highest levels of the Russian government, the Russian officials implicated in embezzling $230 million of public funds and Magnitsky’s repression, have not been held accountable for their crimes. Согласно опросу общественного мнения Левада-центра, 60% россиян выступают за проведение гласного расследования в отношении сотрудников МВД, против которых погибший Сергей Магнитский дал показания об их участии в коррупционной схеме хищения 5,4 миллиардов рублей. Подавляющее большинство, респондентов 79% из числа определившихся с ответом на вопрос о причинах гибели Магнитского, считают, что отказ в течение четырех месяцев в предоставлении ему в следственном изоляторе медицинской помощи не был случайностью, а был осуществлен преднамеренно с целью оказать на него давление.
«Результаты опроса показывают, что в то время как некоторые официальные лица пытаются выгородить воров и убийц в погонах, россияне требуют расследования их преступлений. Опрос общественного мнения продемонстрировал, что документальные свидетельства незаконного ареста и мучений, которым был подвергнут Магнитский, прямо обличают его убийц, и потому люди не верят заявлениям чиновников из МВД и прокуратуры об их не причастности к его истязаниям и гибели. Скрыть правду уже не возможно. Чем дольше власти будут оттягивать привлечение коррумпированных сотрудников МВД к ответственности, тем больше будет расти недовольство людей этой несправедливостью и безнаказанностью чиновников», – сказал представитель Hermitage Capital. 29% of Russians Know About Sergei Magnitsky

A new poll conducted by an independent Levada Center shows that 29% of all Russians have heard of the death in custody Sergei Magnitsky, a 37-year old lawyer for Hermitage fund tortured for his anti-corruption testimony against police officers. Ten months since his death, no one has been charged for his torture and slow, cruel murder in custody.
The poll also reveals that the majority of Russians want an open investigation of Russian interior ministry officials implicated by Mr Magnitsky in corruption and in his retaliatory arrest. Read more

Вечером в пятницу, 1 октября, Департамент информации МИД России обвинил американских сенаторов-авторов закона «Справедливость в отношении Сергея Магнитского», в «неприличном поведении». Внесенный ведущими представителями обеих партий Конгресса США законопроект вводит санкции против лиц, причастных к коррупции и незаконному аресту, пыткам и гибели в следственном изоляторе 37-летнего отца двоих детей Сергея Магнитского. Департамент МИД посчитал, что гибель Магнитского «стала предметом серьезного расследования» в России, и что законопроект ставит «под удар» сотрудничество «по линии правоохранительных органов на таких важных направлениях, как борьба с международной оргпреступностью, терроризмом, наркотрафиком». Surprising Statement from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Criticising the “Justice for Sergei Magnitsky Act”

Today the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs attacked a number of US Senators and Representatives who co-sponsored the ‘Justice for Sergei Magnitsky Act of 2010’ in the US Congress. The statement published on the Foreign Ministry’s official website said that the new law, which introduces US visa and economic sanctions on people responsible for the torture and murder in Interior Ministry custody of Mr Magnitsky, a 37 year-old Russian anti-corruption lawyer and father of two, “goes beyond standards decency,” and “threatens international cooperation among law enforcement agencies in areas of organised crime.”

“It is surprising that the Russian government would tarnish its own reputation by publicly protecting the officers who were involved in the torture and murder of an innocent man. It is even more ironic that the law enforcement officials who perpetrated the largest tax rebate fraud in Russian history are now threatening to withdraw from ‘cooperation’ in fighting organised crime.” Read more
